A Five-Minute Morning Observation

A small routine for noticing how a space changes.

The light in a room is different every day, but it is easy to stop seeing it. Spend five minutes near a window before opening email or turning on every lamp. Notice the direction of shadows, the color of the sky, and which surfaces look inviting. There is no need to make the observation productive.

If you keep notes, write one sentence about the weather and one about the room. After a few weeks, patterns become visible: a corner that is bright only in autumn, a plant that prefers a certain shelf, or a time when glare makes a screen unpleasant.

This is a way to plan with evidence from the place you inhabit. It also gives a familiar room a little of the attention usually reserved for somewhere new.
